The Right Supplies

You’ll need a few things to get those windows looking their best. Grab some glass cleaner or mix your own with water, white vinegar, or mild dish soap. Get some microfiber cloths or lint-free cloths and forget the squeegee. Toss all your cleaning gear into a bucket to keep things organized and easy to grab.

Clean Window Frames

Start by dusting off cobwebs or loose dirt using a soft brush or duster. For a more thorough clean, dampen a cloth with your mild cleaning solution and wipe down the frames. Pay special attention to the corners and edges where grime accumulates.

If your frames are made of wood, be gentle to avoid damage, and dry them promptly to prevent water damage. The same cleaning solution should work for metal or vinyl frames.

Clean On A Cloudy Day

Cleaning windows on a cloudy day is preferable due to the slower drying time of the cleaning solution. Without direct sunlight, the solution has more time to break down dirt and is less likely to evaporate quickly, resulting in a streak-free finish.

Start From The Top

Whenever you clean windows, you will be able to achieve a cleaner and more efficient result if you start from the top. By beginning at the upper part of the window, any dripping or excess cleaning solution naturally falls onto the sections that haven’t been cleaned yet.

This way, you can clean the lower portions of the window without worrying about additional streaks caused by drips. Working from top to bottom also ensures you don’t need to revisit areas you’ve already cleaned, preventing double work and saving time.

Use A Squeegee

Keeping your windows clean with this handy tool ensures a smooth, streak-free finish by efficiently removing cleaning solution or water from the glass surface. Start at the top and pull the squeegee down continuously, wiping the blade with a clean cloth after each pass.

The rubber blade acts like a windshield wiper by collecting and directing liquid away. This method speeds up cleaning and significantly reduces streaks and water spots. A squeegee is particularly effective for larger windows.

Wipe With A Microfiber Cloth

After using a squeegee to remove the cleaning solution, the final touch for spotless windows involves wiping with a microfiber cloth. Their ultra-fine fibres capture and lift away any remaining moisture, ensuring a streak-free and polished surface. Microfiber’s soft and gentle nature prevents scratches or damage to glass, so is great for keeping your windows clean.

Clean Both Sides

Cleaning both sides of the window is essential! Start with the interior, removing dirt, dust, or fingerprints. Once the inside is sparkling, move on to the exterior for a thorough clean. This ensures that both sides of the glass are free of grime, allowing maximum clarity and enhancing the overall appearance of your windows.

Remove Stubborn Stains

A mixture of water and mild dish soap will often work for adhesives or sticky substances. For more stubborn stains like bird droppings, a solution of water, vinegar, or a specialized glass cleaner may be necessary. Hard water stains, typically caused by mineral deposits, can be tackled with vinegar and baking soda.

Let the solution sit for a few minutes, and then remove the grime with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth. Always test any cleaning solution in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t damage glass.
