The Ultimate Guide To Maintaining Your Health Through A Divorce

Divorce can be emotionally, mentally and physically taxing. While navigating such a life-altering process, it’s easy to forget about prioritizing your health. However, maintaining your wellbeing during this challenging time is crucial to getting through it with resilience. Here’s the ultimate guide to staying healthy as you move forward.

Switch Up Your Routine

A divorce can shake up your daily life in more ways than one, and while this can feel like chaos, it’s also an opportunity to refresh your routine. If you’ve been stuck in a rut, now might be the perfect time to try something new. Consider trying out a workout class or picking up a new hobby.

Small changes can create a sense of excitement and novelty, helping you break the monotony and give you a renewed sense of control. Even something as simple as rearranging your furniture or starting your day with a new morning ritual can make a big difference in how you feel.

Do More Of What You Love

Whether it’s painting, reading, hiking or cooking, make time for activities that spark joy and fulfillment. Divorce can push you to rediscover who you are outside of your relationship, and one of the most rewarding ways to do this is by reconnecting with the things that make you happiest.

These moments of enjoyment are essential for healing and reminding yourself of the passions that are uniquely yours. When life feels uncertain, engaging in what you love can bring clarity, peace and even a sense of accomplishment that boosts your overall well-being.

Keep Moving

Exercise can be a powerful stress reliever and mood booster. Start small — take a brisk walk, try a yoga session or follow along with a quick video online. You don’t need to commit to a full routine to feel the benefits.

If you prefer social interaction, group fitness classes can be a great way to move your body while connecting with others. The sense of accomplishment you get from staying active will help you feel more in control during an otherwise unpredictable time.

Fuel Yourself

Stress from divorce can disrupt your appetite — either you find yourself skipping meals or craving comfort foods. Try to eat regularly and choose dishes that nourish your body and mind. Foods like fish that re rich in omega-3s can support brain health, while yogurt helps balance your gut microbiome, which could help your anxiety.

Balance is key, and comfort foods are still OK in moderation. A bowl of ice cream now and then won’t hurt, especially as you go through the motions.

Balance Your Health With Parenting

If you have young children, the challenges of maintaining your health during a divorce can feel even more overwhelming. You may be riding your own emotional roller coaster while supporting your little ones through their own feelings of grief, confusion or anger.

For kids younger than 18 months, verbal explanations of what’s happening won’t register in a way that brings comfort. At this age, physical soothing like cuddling can provide the emotional security they need. Knowing they feel safe in your arms can ease your own mind during an uncertain time.

For older children, you can provide age-appropriate explanations about changes in the family. While this doesn’t make the situation easy, helping them understand what’s happening can assist them in processing their feelings.

Lean On Your Support System

You don’t have to go through trying times alone. Reach out to trusted friends, family members or support groups. Surrounding yourself with people who care about you can help you feel less isolated and more grounded.

Be honest with your loved ones about how they can support you. Maybe it’s helping look after your little ones, running errands or simply being a listening ear. People who care about you want to help — you just need to let them know how.

Don’t Skimp On Sleep

Sleep often becomes a casualty during stressful times, but it’s one of the most critical factors for your well-being. An organized and clutter-free room is conducive to a peaceful environment, allowing your mind to unwind and your body to relax. Keep your bedroom a stress-free zone and avoid scrolling through emails or social media before bed.

If racing thoughts keep you awake, try writing them down in a notebook to free your mind for rest. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, like reading or listening to music before you turn in for the night. Sleep is your body’s time to repair and reset, so getting enough of it will make you better equipped to handle whatever challenges the day brings.

Focus On What You Can Control

During a separation, it’s easy to fixate on what you’ve lost or what feels beyond your control. Shift your focus to the things you can manage — your routine, self-care practices and future goals.

Set small, achievable objectives for yourself, like organizing your living space, learning something new or simply making it through the day. Accomplishing even one important task can provide much-needed stability.

Preparing For Your New Beginnings

Divorce is undoubtedly one of life’s most challenging transitions, but it can also be a time of growth and renewal. You can thrive in the next chapter of your life by prioritizing your health.

Remember — healing takes time. Be patient with yourself and lean into the support systems and practices that work for you.
