Five Everyday Habits That Can Make Intimacy Less Comfortable

An extra wash, another hour at your desk, or continuing when something feels uncomfortable: these small habits can be easy to overlook.

Sexual health also includes the everyday choices that affect comfort, hygiene, and how you respond to your body’s needs. Masturbation itself is normal and generally healthy. Friction, poor cleaning, and ignoring discomfort are more useful things to focus on.

Here are five everyday habits worth reconsidering, along with practical changes to help make intimacy feel more comfortable.

1. Trying To Make Your Vagina Smell Like A Personal Care Product

Your vagina does not need an internal rinse or a floral scent.

Douching means washing inside the vagina with water or another liquid. It may disturb the natural balance of bacteria and acidity and is linked to problems such as bacterial vaginosis and pelvic inflammatory disease. The vagina cleans itself; gently washing the external area, called the vulva, is different.

Keep cleaning simple. Do not use scented products to cover up a new odor. If a change in smell lasts, or comes with unusual discharge, itching, or pain, seek medical help rather than switching to a stronger cleanser.

2. Forgetting That Overall Health Also Affects Intimacy

One dessert will not ruin your sex life. However, long-term health conditions can affect sexual response and comfort.

For example, diabetes can damage nerves and blood vessels. For women, this may cause reduced sensation, vaginal dryness, and painful sex. This is a specific medical link, not proof that eating sugar directly causes low desire. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases

Physical activity matters, too. When you have been sitting for a long time, get up and take a short walk. Even starting with a small amount of activity has value.

3. Regularly Skipping Urination After Sex: Setting The Stage For Stinging During Your Next Intimate Moment

Some women habitually fall asleep after intimacy without urinating because they feel sleepy or cannot be bothered. Although the American Urological Association (AUA) notes that research has not confirmed that urinating after sex can prevent all recurrent urinary tract infections with 100% certainty, organizations such as the UK’s NHS still recommend it as a reasonable hygiene habit. The most direct cost of regularly skipping this step is making the next intimate experience painfully uncomfortable. Friction during sex can easily push bacteria into a woman’s shorter urethra. Without the physical “flushing” action of urination, bacteria can multiply and develop into a urinary tract infection (UTI).

4. Skipping Foreplay Or Rejecting Lubricant: Believing That “Natural Is Always Best”

This may be one of the most common misconceptions about intimacy, yet also one of the hardest to discuss openly. Many people, especially male partners, mistakenly believe that if a woman is “aroused enough,” her body will always produce plenty of natural lubrication. Some women themselves even feel that using a manufactured lubricant means something is “wrong” with them or that they are “unattractive.”

In fact, natural lubrication is a complex physical process. It is strongly affected by hormonal cycles, daily stress, fatigue, and even certain medications, such as cold medicines and birth control pills. Starting too quickly before the body is ready, or when there is not enough lubrication, can create intense friction that directly causes the following:

  • Visible physical harm: Small tears in delicate genital tissue, redness, swelling, and a hot, burning sensation.
  • Emotional defenses breaking down: This pain can last for several days and may even cause your body to tense up and pull away instinctively the next time your partner approaches.

5. Believing You Should Push Through Discomfort

Whether during partnered sex or masturbation, soreness is a signal to pause. Increasing pressure or continuing for longer does not always solve the problem.
