How to Stay Calm In Stressful Times

Life is full of stress, unexpected things, and days that are not so good. It’s normal. But it’s easy for stress to build up leaving us feeling overwhelmed. Some situations are inevitable, and there’s nothing we can do to control them. We can, however, control how we react in such situations and make the stressful situation a little more manageable.

Here are some techniques that can help you stay calm when faced with stressful situations:

Deep Breathing

Controlling our breathing is one of the most effective techniques for reducing anxiety or stress. Learning breathing exercises to try and calm your body and mind can be really beneficial.

Longer, deeper calming breaths will help to calm your brain and reduce the need for our fight or flight response.

Breathe in slowly through your nose, hold your breath for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat this several times, focusing on your breath and releasing tension with each exhale.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Stay present. Use meditation practices to bring your attention to the present moment and reduce stress. Pay attention to your thoughts and sensations without judgment. Meditation can help you develop a calmer and more focused mindset over time.

Stay Healthy

Prioritize self-care. Maintain a healthy lifestyle by getting regular exercise, eating nutritious meals, and getting enough sleep.

Reach Out For Help

Never feel afraid to ask for help or advice. Talking about your feelings can reduce the stress you feel. So reach out to your support system, friends, family, or a therapist. Sharing your feelings with someone you trust can provide comfort and perspective. They may also offer advice or help you brainstorm solutions to your challenges.

Challenge Your Thoughts

We tend to overthink every single situation, thinking of every possible scenario for absolutely everything. When you’re worrying or feeling anxious due to a stressful situation, take a step back and challenge your thoughts. What’s the worst that can happen? What can I do if the worst happens? Is it productive to think about all of these scenarios? Try to rationalize your worries, it will really help to see things a little more practically. Use positive self-talk to challenge negative thoughts and reframe stressful situations. Constantly remind yourself that you can handle the situation and that everything is temporary, even the stressful times.

Break Tasks into Manageable Steps

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a long to-do list or a project, break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. Prioritize them and tackle them one at a time. Focusing on one task at a time can make it feel less daunting and increase your sense of accomplishment. Also, take breaks whenever you can. Take a walk, do some stretching exercises, or engage in activities that help you relax and clear your mind.

Set Boundaries

Protect your time and energy. Learn to say no to anything that will only add to your stress levels. Prioritize activities and responsibilities that are most important and let go of non-essential tasks.

Remember that stressful times are temporary and that you have overcome challenges in the past. Remind yourself that you have the resilience and ability to navigate through difficult times.

It’s important to note that if you’re experiencing overwhelming stress, it may be beneficial to seek professional help. A mental health professional can provide guidance to your specific situation and help you develop coping strategies that work for you.

Sending you so much love ❤️
