Get To The Dentist Now! The Ten Most Common Fallacies About Modern Dentistry

While it’s true to say that we all probably have some misconceptions about dentistry it’s certainly evident that people who put off going to the dentist the most, and who have the worst teeth, spout the most fallacies when it comes to modern dentistry.

Aspiring to healthy teeth, gums and mouth is one of the most important things anyone can strive for.

So what are the Top Ten Fallacies about modern dentistry that people bang on about who like to think they are in the know but are the complete opposite?

1. Natural Is Best

Number 1 on our list is that natural means better. Sure, some natural solutions like making your own toothpaste can be valid but modern dental treatments offer scientifically validated, effective solutions.

2. The More Expensive The Better

Next on our list, is the fallacy that expensive means better. Wrong! Cost does not always translate to more effectiveness or better quality. Many Australians opt to have treatment abroad in health hubs like Thailand where procedures are far cheaper and just as good.

3. It’s All About Appearance

Thirdly, the fallacy that dentistry is cosmetic still prevails. This causes people to underestimate the importance of dentistry – it’s not just about appearances – oral health is a bedrock for holistic wellbeing.

4. It’s Going To Hurt

What many people who avoid the dentist believe, is that it will be painful. Sure, there can be discomfort but advances in anaesthetics as well as the science of pain management have mitigated this. Remember that it will probably hurt more – in the mouth and the wallet – if you put off going!

5. You Should Only Go To The Detist If You Have A Problem

You’ll hear many people say they only go to the dentist if they get a toothache. Crazy. Regular check-ups are vital and will help to head off problems further down the line. Ever heard the expression “prevention is better than cure” – the professional specialists at Beseen certainly have!

6. Whitening Products Are Harmful

Fallacy number 6 on our list is that whitening products are harmful to teeth. Even over-the-counter whitening products are safe when used correctly. Whitening under professional supervision is best of all.

7. Braces Aren’t For Adults

Next up is that braces are only for kids. While it is true that some corrective procedures for misaligned teeth are better done in formative years, there is ample evidence to suggest that adults benefit from the use of things such as braces and modern plastic clear aligners.

8. If You Brush Well Enough You Don’t Need To Floss

Flossing is not necessary so long as you brush well, ranks as fallacy number eight. While it has been proven that electric toothbrushes can get between interdental spaces better, a normal brush certainly can’t. Unfortunately, the dentist dad in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory kept this one going, being proud that Will had never flossed. A horror from Christopher Lee!

9. Root Canals Are Dangerous

The idea that root canals are painful and dangerous is….dangerous, bunkum, untrue! Period. Modern dentistry is so much better than it was years ago.

10. It Doesn’t Matter If You Don’t Have Healthy Teeth

Finally, never believe anyone who tells you that there is no correlation between good teeth and longevity.

Regular trips to the dentist can add happy years to your life!
