Signs You Need Physical Therapy After An Injury

Physiotherapy is a method of ensuring professional athletes perform at the highest level. However, such treatments are not solely reserved for top-performing athletes or those suffering from an injury, and you need not feel intimidated by the idea. Physical therapy will improve your health in many ways. It will help build an active lifestyle and will improve your flexibility and strength. If you are preparing for surgery or looking to recover from the one you have undergone, physical therapy will benefit you. It is often used as a conservative means of handling a health issue, and no prescription is required to work with a physiotherapist. Here are different signs you need physical therapy after an injury.

You Experience Pain

If you are suffering from pain that does not subside or go away, you need to consider physical therapy. The pain from an injury should subside with time, but if it remains and becomes chronic, you need to pay attention to it. It happens more often in lower back and neck injuries and could impact every aspect of your life. A physiotherapist will work with you to identify the cause that has led to the pain and will create a treatment plan that can eliminate or reduce the pain entirely.

You Feel Discomfort At The Desk

Your body is built to move, and if you remain seated all day or for longer periods at the desk, it will cause strain on the back, joints, and neck. Hence, it is important to get up to stretch and look for a healthy desk setup. Through physical therapy, you can also combat the risk of desk discomfort. An expert can help you with good posture at the desk and give advice on an ideal home office desk setup.

Pain And Discomfort From Any Physical Activity

A physical therapist will help individuals who experience discomfort and pain caused due to excessive activity. This includes conditions like tendonitis, which causes the tendons to become inflamed, painful, and irritated when they go through a lot of pressure. Swimmers, volleyball players, and baseball players often suffer from tendonitis. That said, if you are suffering from an ITB syndrome or UCL sprain, physical therapy will be useful. Several athletes suffer from tennis elbow and UCL sprain, and while it isn’t very big, it could become a source of worry. The best sports physical therapists recommend seeing a doctor as soon as you notice constant pain or discomfort when you engage in a game.

Discomfort Walking

There are several conditions that can cause discomfort in walking, including peroneal, bunions, and Morton’s neuroma, which is a condition where you feel like a rock inside your shoe. You must remember that these signs mean you need to see a physical therapist at the earliest.

You Have Gone Through Surgery

Physical therapy always works with surgical procedures. It will help you with a speedy recovery and rehabilitation. The body parts that can benefit from physical therapy pre- and post-operation include the knee, shoulder, ankle, and hip. If you have undergone knee surgery, shoulder replacement, ankle or foot procedures, hip joint replacement, or a reverse shoulder replacement, you might want to consider physical therapy for a quick recovery.

You Cannot Perform The Daily Tasks

When you start to struggle with daily tasks, you need to consider seeing a physical therapist right away. Before the pain sets in, the body will try to compensate for it and handle the developing issue. So, when you want to complete a task, you may be able to do it, but it can become a lot more challenging. Through physical therapy, you will be able to access the joint-specific and functional movements to identify if your movements are safe and optimal.

Pain At The Joint Of The Skull And Jaw

Temporomandibular dysfunction will impact the joints of the skull and jawbone. This can cause tenderness and pain while limiting your jaw mobility. If you suffer from this condition, you will face severe headaches and pain in the neck or ears. A physical therapist will be able to determine the cause and then develop a treatment plan for you based on the condition.

You Suffer From Neck Pain

Cervical radiculopathy, or a pinched nerve in the neck, is a condition that can lead to numbness and pain. An injury might cause the nerves to become compressed, and they serve as a line of communication between the muscles and the brain. Hence, this condition could cause severe pain and isn’t something that should be taken lightly. In some cases, the symptoms may go away on their own, but in most cases, physical therapy is required to relieve pain and improve posture and strength.

You Struggle With Balance

Not many consider loss of balance to be caused by injury, but there is a chance that if you have noticed a sudden loss of sense of balance, it will be due to an illness, condition, or injury affecting the vestibular system. A physiotherapist can help you recover from this loss of balance using a treatment known as vestibular rehabilitation, and they can also help you recover from whatever condition caused the issue.

If you have suffered from an injury or have had to undergo surgery, you might have already considered physical therapy, and if you haven’t, here are the signs you should. Never take an injury or pain lightly, and reach out to a medical professional right in time. Physical therapy is an ideal way to build strength and recover from an injury. The right physiotherapist will develop a personalized plan based on your condition to ensure steady and timely recovery. No matter your age, it is possible to recover after an injury with the right exercises. For some, it may take longer, but in most cases, physical therapy can be highly beneficial. Always speak to your doctor or surgeon before you reach out to a physiotherapist. This will help ensure that you are on the right path towards recovery, and you will see noticeable progress.
