How To Prioritise Your Recovery Even When Life Gets Stressful

Even the best-organised, healthiest life gets stressful sometimes. And even the most health-and-wellbeing conscious people can turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms during stressful times. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of stress-busting indulgence every now and again but, if you’re in recovery, ‘stress-busting indulgence’ can be deadly.

Stress diminishes our energy, and our ability to resist temptation. At the same time, it can provoke an avalanche of negative emotions that make many of us want to take refuge in unhealthy habits. So, bearing in mind that it’s impossible to completely eradicate all stressors from life, how can someone in recovery prioritise their sobriety even in stressful situations?

Let’s take a look:

Value The Importance Of Professional Help

One of the easiest mistakes to make during a stressful period is convincing yourself that recovery can wait until things calm down. Unfortunately, things don’t really work that way, and putting your recovery on the back burner can create far more stressful situations down the line. Professional support helps prevent that from happening. Whether that means attending counselling sessions, working with a local recovery service or even checking into an affordable private rehab clinic, professional support gives you something that stress often strips away: accountability. When everything else in your life is chaotic, having somebody whose job is to keep you focused on recovery can make a huge difference.

Remember, Self-Care Is Essential

During stressful times, it’s all too easy to neglect our physical and emotional well-being. However, practising self-care is vital to recovery, even during the most stressful of times. So, keep up with your balanced diet, and don’t let your usual self-care routines fall by the wayside. It could also help to engage in stress-busting physical activities, like walking, yoga, or swimming to recharge your body and mind. Also make sure that you’re getting enough rest and sleep as they are vital for proper mental functioning and regulating emotional responses.

Stay Committed To Your Recovery Plan

When life gets stressful, it’s easy to start cutting corners or even entirely ignoring aspects of your recovery plan. Don’t let this happen. It’s crucial to keep your recovery plan in focus, even if this means that you have to deprioritise some other stressors in your life. To maintain your sobriety, you also need to maintain your coping strategies, avoid your triggers, and stick to your goals. If you feel stressed, a good recovery plan could actually help. If you’ve not already got stress-busting techniques and so on in your recovery plan, add them in and engage in them.

Lean On Your Support Network

Never underestimate the power of emotional support, especially during challenging times. Your support network – family, friends, or a support group, can provide much-needed emotional strength and encouragement.

Sharing your worries and stressors with your support network can diffuse their intensity and prevent the feeling of being overpowered by life’s challenges. Regularly connect with members of your support network and make the most of their strength and encouragement to remain focused on your recovery.

Mindfulness And Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools to aid recovery and manage stress. The practice helps you live in the present moment rather than dwelling on past mistakes or worrying about future challenges. Regular mindfulness and meditation practice can manage stress better, improve mental resilience and contribute greatly to your recovery journey.

Final Thoughts

Recovery is a personal journey filled with a lot of hurdles, and stressful times can make everything feel ten times more difficult. Prioritising recovery amidst a stressful life entails making consistent and conscious decisions to safeguard your well-being. While it’s essential to navigate through life’s stresses, remember that your recovery should always be at the helm. With professional support and a strong commitment, you can successfully prioritise your recovery and achieve the sobriety you’ve strived for.
