The Wellness Benefits Of Skiing

During winter, thousands of British skiing enthusiasts, of various levels of skill, will be flocking to the Alps in search of piste, powder, and a host of apres-ski activities. Skiing is a pastime that’s been enjoyed for generations – and it’s one with a number of benefits. Like any other form of exercise, skiing is great for your body and mind. Let’s delve into a few of the wellness benefits of skiing.

Improves Cardiovascular Health

If you’re going to remain in control of your descent, you’ll need to put in a little bit of effort. Depending on the slope you’re traversing, you’ll bump up your heart rate. This will improve your circulation, and keep your heart in excellent condition. Since you’re working at altitude, the strain on your body will actually be that little bit harder. Thus, the cardiovascular benefits are that little bit greater.

Strengthens Muscles And Enhances Core Stability

Keeping yourself stable while you’re descending requires keeping your core muscles engaged – as well as those of your quads, glutes, and calves. This constant work of stabilisation, as well as the effort of actually turning the skis as you slalom down every run, can be a great way to build up your overall muscular strength and endurance. The workout hits so many muscle groups that it’s perfect for avoiding muscular injuries, too – but for best results, you’ll need to make sure that your musculature is in reasonably good shape before you set out on holiday.

Boosts Mental Health

One great thing about this form of exercise is that it takes place outdoors. Not only that, but it takes place, by necessity, far away from major city centres and transport hubs. This means that the air is just about as clean and fresh as it possibly can be. What’s more, you’ll find gorgeous, inspiring mountain scenery – and in many cases, plenty of woodland – all around you. This is especially the case in certain resorts. Holidays in France such as Avoriaz, provide ski holidays exactly the required sense of seclusion.

You’ll often find yourself achieving a state of perfect relaxation as you descend. In much the same way as a long hike through nature, a good skiing trip can bolster your mood, improve your concentration, and reduce your stress levels. In other words, it’s a perfect antidote for the winter blues.

Enhances Flexibility And Coordination

Skiing also has the benefit of improving coordination and flexibility. You’ll be constantly required to react to new situations, since no two descents are quite the same. Over time, you’ll improve your motor skills, and your general sense of where your body is in space. These skills are critically important for avoiding injury as you get older – as is the fact that skiing leads to stronger bones (in spite of the fact that it risks breaking them).

Encourages Social Connection And Relaxation

Finally, it’s worth emphasising the social benefits as well as the wellness benefits of skiing. If you’re heading out with a group of people, you can encourage one another, and share tips on how to tackle a particular slope. You’ll also be able to bond with one another over some apres-ski activities!
