Therapist’s Guide To Staying Connected Through The Holidays (Even If You’re Struggling)

The holidays are supposed to be twinkling lights and cozy moments, but if your relationship is already strained, the season can land like a weight on your chest. I’ve seen it countless times with couples, including couples who reach out for support. December has a way of taking whatever is already tender and pressing on it.

Part of the trouble is expectation. We imagine the holidays the way movies tell us they should look with perfect meals, and perfect families, making perfect memories. In real life, there are budgets to juggle, family dynamics to navigate, childhood memories that surface without warning, and calendars stuffed with more than anyone has the bandwidth for. No one thrives under that kind of pressure.

You find yourself wondering why something as simple as putting up lights or deciding whose house to visit can know the wind right out of both of you.

But here’s the steadier truth. With a few honest conversations and some gentle boundaries, you can get through his season without losing each other. Believe it or not, you can even come out stronger.

Here are 6 ways you can begin moving in the right direction:

6 Ways To Stay Connected Through The Holidays

1. Trade “perfect” for “good enough”

Let go of the fantasy. Real holidays are messy, and that’s okay. Decide together what “good enough” looks like this year. Maybe it’s simpler meals, fewer events, less rushing. When you stop chasing a flawless holiday, the two of you can breathe.

2. Build on daily moment of connection

You don’t need an hour. You need ten minutes without the world grabbing at you. Coffee before the day starts, a short walk after dinner, a shared moment at bedtime.  These tiny rituals keep the emotional floor steady.

Try something as simple as, “Can we take 10 minutes tonight with no phones? I want to feel close to you through all this.”

3. Make a budget pact

Money stress flares fast this time of year. Choose a number together for gifts, travel and extras, and stick to it. Overspending to “make the season special” often backfires. Pick one or two memories instead, such as a neighborhood lights walk, or a movie night may do more for your relationship than anything bought in a store.

You might say, “Let’s agree on a number we can both live with, then plan one simple thing we’ll enjoy.”

4. Divide and conquer the calendar

You’re not required to attend everything together. Decide what you both want to do, what one of you wants to do solo, and what can be skipped entirely. Protecting your energy protects your connection.

5. Choose a time-out signal

Conflicts will happen. Families are involved and stress can be high. Decide in advance how you will pause when emotions climb. A few minutes outside or a quiet reset later that day can spare you both a lot of pain.

A gentle phrasing can work wonders. “I love you and this matters. Can we step outside for five minutes so we don’t say something we’ll regret?”

6. Set loving boundaries with family

This is the hard one for many couples. You are not required to meet every expectation placed on you. Boundaries are not a rejection. They’re protection for your relationship. You can arrive later, leave earlier, or alternate years. Or start one tradition that is yours alone.

Script: “We’re excited to see everyone, and we’ll be there from three to six. That window helps us keep the day calm.”

Holidays magnify whatever is already present. A little steadiness, some honest planning, and a few loving limits can turn a pressured season into one you move through side by side instead of drifting apart.
