Understanding GLP-1 Medications: Side Effects & Safety

What You Need to Know Before You Start

If you’ve been hearing about GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, you’re not alone. These once-a-week injections have become a hot topic for their incredible weight loss results, helping many shed 10 to 15% (or more!) of their body weight.

But before jumping in, it’s important to know: GLP-1s are powerful tools, not magic pills, and they come with some safety considerations you should understand.

Let’s break it down simply and honestly.

Common Side Effects

Most users experience at least some mild side effects when starting GLP-1 medications.

These are usually digestive and tend to ease with time as the body adjusts.

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bloating or fullness

These symptoms are linked to the way GLP-1 slows down digestion.

Less Common: When to Seek Medical Advice

While rare, there are some potential risks you should be aware of:

  • Severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away, especially if it’s in the upper abdomen and radiates to your back.

👉 This could be a sign of pancreatitis

  • Persistent nausea and vomiting, especially if you can’t keep fluids down

👉 Risk of dehydration and kidney strain

  • Swelling or a lump in the neck, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing

👉 These could be warning signs related to the thyroid, especially if you have a history of thyroid issues

  • Signs of gallbladder problems, like pain after eating fatty foods, or pain in the upper right side of the abdomen

👉 Could indicate gallstones

  • Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, dizziness, or difficulty breathing

👉 While rare, these need urgent medical care

Is GLP-1 Right For You?

✅ People with obesity or excess weight who have struggled with diet/exercise alone

✅ Clients with weight-related health concerns like prediabetes or high blood pressure

✅ Those ready to combine meds with healthy eating, movement, and coaching support

They may NOT be ideal for:

❌ People with a history of pancreatitis or thyroid cancer

❌ Anyone looking for a “quick fix” without lifestyle changes

Safe Use: How to Maximize Benefits and Minimize Risks

Start Low, Go Slow: Dosing is typically gradual to reduce side effects.

  • Stay Hydrated: Especially if nausea or diarrhea occurs.
  • Eat Small, Frequent Meals: This can help manage digestive symptoms.
  • Regular Check-ups: Monitor bloodwork, kidney function, and overall health.
  • Pair with Lifestyle: These meds are not magic pills. Diet, movement, and mindset still matter a lot.

The Final Word

GLP-1s can be highly effective when used with proper guidance, and that’s where coaching makes all the difference. Support from a coach helps you build the habits, mindset, and routines that lead to sustainable, long-term success.
